The Situation
A family in Kuala Terengganu came to the office two years after the death of their father. The estate included a family home, an agricultural lot in a neighbouring district and a small business operated by the deceased without a formal partnership agreement. Three of the five siblings were in Malaysia; two were abroad.
What the Office Did
The office prepared a written plan covering the valuation of all three asset classes, the formal notification of the overseas siblings and the resolution of the business interest question. Progress notes were sent at each stage. The two siblings abroad were kept informed throughout.
The Outcome
The estate was administered and distributed within twenty-two months of instruction. A full account was provided. The family reported that receiving written updates throughout had prevented the misunderstandings and disagreements they had feared.

The Situation
A retired civil servant came to the office uncertain whether, as a Muslim, a will served any purpose for him. He had assets that included a civil service pension, savings and property, and wanted to understand what would happen to each on his death.
What the Office Did
The solicitor set out what each asset class was subject to — the pension rules, the Faraid provisions and the assets that fell within the scope of a civil will. The client was not steered toward any arrangement. He chose to prepare a will covering the aspects that civil law could govern and requested a meeting with his intended executor.
The Outcome
Will prepared and signed within five weeks. The executor meeting was held a week after the will was completed. The client reported that the process had given him clarity he had not expected to find.

The Situation
A widow came to the office eight days after her husband's death, accompanied by her adult daughter and her brother-in-law. She was not certain whether she needed legal help or simply wanted to know what the first steps were. She was not ready to commit to anything.
What the Office Did
The meeting covered the registration of the death, the securing of accounts, what the estate appeared to contain and what steps could wait. Written notes were prepared for each of the three attendees. The office made clear it would not follow up unless they wished.
The Outcome
The family returned six weeks later and instructed the office to administer the estate. They later said the written note from the first meeting had been the most useful document they had during that period.
